Kurz gesagt

Spend day one on the river: a boat at dawn, a walk along the ghats, the old city lanes at midday and the Ganga aarti at dusk. Spend day two on Sarnath in the morning, a rest in the heat, and a quieter evening at Assi Ghat. Book the boat and any guide the day before, and keep a buffer for fog and slow lanes.

Two days is the right length for Varanasi: long enough for a dawn boat, the ghats, the old city and the evening aarti, and short enough that the intensity does not wear you down. The Varanasi travel guide covers the background. It fits a longer India trip that often links Delhi, Agra and Varanasi.

The plan is built around the river and the heat. The cool hours at dawn and dusk go to the ghats, and the middle of the day goes to lanes, lunch and Sarnath. If you stay near the river, you can walk almost everything on day one. See where to stay in Varanasi for bases that suit this plan.

1. Day 1: Dawn boat, ghat walk, old lanes and the aarti

Boat and any guide, the day before

Start before sunrise, because the river is at its best then. Take a boat from the ghat nearest your hotel, usually Dashashwamedh or Assi, and drift along the western bank as the light comes up. You will see pilgrims bathing, priests under umbrellas and the old palaces and temples stacked above the steps. A ride of about an hour or two covers the main stretch, and boatmen can row north toward the burning ghats or south toward Assi.

Agree the price, the route and the duration before you board, and do not buy anything on the boat. If you want a more relaxed morning, ask your hotel to arrange it. Do not photograph the cremations at Manikarnika Ghat. Keep your distance, and ignore anyone who offers to take you closer for a donation.

After the boat, walk back along the ghats. The steps run for kilometers, with different characters: bathing ghats, laundry ghats, the wide steps of Dashashwamedh and the quiet stretches near Assi. The walk is easiest in the morning, when the light is soft and the sun is not yet hot. Stop for a masala chai from a stall and a breakfast of kachori and sweet jalebi, which is a traditional local start to the day.

By midday, retreat to the old city lanes behind the ghats. This is the maze of Godowlia, Kachori Gali and the markets, where Banarasi silk, brass, sweets and temple goods are sold. The Kashi Vishwanath temple is the major shrine here. Bags and phones are usually not allowed inside, so ask your hotel about lockers and current rules, and expect security checks and queues. Eat a long lunch somewhere cool, then rest during the hottest hours.

In the late afternoon, go back to Dashashwamedh Ghat for the Ganga aarti. Arrive well before dusk if you want a place on the steps, because the crowds are large. A boat gives a calmer view from the water, and a rooftop terrace is another option if you want to sit down. The ritual of fire, bells and chanting lasts about an hour. After it, eat dinner in the old city, or take a short ride back to your hotel.

2. Day 2: Sarnath, a rest and a calmer evening

Start

Begin day two more slowly. Sarnath is about 10 km north of the city, and the taxi takes roughly 30 to 45 minutes depending on traffic. It is where the Buddha gave his first sermon, and the site has the ruins of ancient monasteries, the large Dhamek stupa, a modern temple and a museum. Walk the park first, then see the museum if you want context, and check opening hours and ticket rules on the day, since they change.

Sarnath is much calmer than the city, with leafy paths and visiting pilgrims from many countries. Allow two to three hours, then have lunch in a simple restaurant nearby. If you are short on time, you can do Sarnath as a morning trip and be back in the city by lunch. For a quieter option, our Uttar Pradesh travel guide shows where Sarnath fits among the other stops on the Ganges plain.

Return to the city for a rest. In the late afternoon, walk to Assi Ghat at the southern end, where the pace is slower. There is a smaller aarti here too, plus cafes, bookshops and musicians. It is a gentler way to end the trip than the crowded main ghat, and it works well if you plan a dawn departure the next day.

If you have energy for more, add a third morning at Ramnagar Fort, on the east bank, or a music or silk-weaving visit, and keep the afternoons free. Many travelers also use the extra time to rest, since the city is tiring in the heat.

Guide or solo?

Varanasi can be done on your own, but a local guide adds a lot on the first morning, when the rituals and the ghats are new. A guide explains who is bathing where, what the shrines are and how the burning ghats work, and they can steer you through the lanes. The trade-off is a fixed route and a fee, and some touts pose as guides, so book through your hotel or a known operator.

For most first-time visitors, one guided morning followed by independent walking is the best mix. For a repeat trip, go solo and use the saved money for a better room.

Moving around and pacing the two days

Walking is the main way to see the ghats, and it is also the slowest part of the plan. The distance from Assi in the south to Dashashwamedh in the center is a few kilometers, and the steps, the crowds and the heat stretch it. Use e-rickshaws or a boat for the long stretches, and save your legs for the lanes. Cabs and autos are available for Sarnath, and an app cab is usually simpler than haggling.

Keep the middle of the day free. Between about noon and four o'clock the ghats are hot and the lanes are crowded, so a long lunch and a rest in an air-conditioned room are part of the plan, not a wasted hour. If you are traveling in winter, the same hours are the best time for a walk, and early mornings may be too foggy for photographs.

If you land late on the first day, shift the plan by half a day and start the boat on the second morning. The aarti and the lanes can wait, and the dawn light is the one thing that does not repeat.

Etiquette, health and heat

Varanasi is a place of daily worship and mourning, so behave as you would in a cathedral. Dress modestly, keep your voice low near the burning ghats and do not photograph cremations or people bathing without asking. Remove shoes before entering temples, and ask before taking photos in any shrine. Keep your right hand for eating and giving.

Heat and water decide how the day feels. From about April to June it is very hot, and December and January mornings can be cold and foggy. Drink bottled or filtered water, eat at busy places and carry hand sanitizer. A stomach bug is the usual way a trip loses a day, so travel insurance with medical cover is worth having. Check the monsoon too: from about July to September the river rises and can limit boat rides.

Keep a small buffer in your plan for slow lanes and delays. Trains in and out can run late in winter fog, so do not book a tight connection the same night. Our getting around India page explains how to book trains and compare them with flights.

Where to stay for this plan

For this plan, sleep near Dashashwamedh or Assi Ghat, so the dawn boat and the aarti are a short walk away. The old city is loud and narrow, and Assi is calmer, so choose by how much quiet you want. A hotel in the Cantonment is easier for early trains, but you lose the walk to the river. The full comparison is in where to stay in Varanasi.

If the river is only one part of a wider Ganges trip, compare it with the yoga towns of the north in Varanasi vs Rishikesh vs Haridwar. A travel eSIM keeps maps, cab apps and train bookings working in the lanes, and the India e-Visa guide explains the entry step before you fly. See eSIMs and connectivity to compare plans.

Häufige Fragen

Is 2 days enough in Varanasi?

Yes for the essentials: a dawn boat, the ghats, the old lanes, the aarti and Sarnath. Add a third day for Ramnagar Fort, music or silk workshops, or a slower pace. A single day is possible but rushed.

What time should I take the Varanasi boat ride?

At or just before sunrise, when the light is soft and the morning rituals are under way. Agree the price, the route and the length before you board, and ask your hotel to arrange it if you want to avoid haggling.

Where do you watch the Ganga aarti?

The big nightly aarti is at Dashashwamedh Ghat. Arrive well before dusk for a place on the steps, or watch from a boat or a rooftop for a calmer view. Assi Ghat also holds a smaller aarti.

Can non-Hindus visit the Kashi Vishwanath temple?

Rules and security checks change, and phones and bags are usually not allowed inside. Ask at the gate or your hotel for the current rules, and do not rely on touts who offer a shortcut.

How do you get to Sarnath from the city?

By taxi, auto or cab, about 30 to 45 minutes depending on traffic, for roughly 10 km. Agree a return fare before you set off, or book a cab with a waiting time.

What should I wear in Varanasi?

Light, loose clothes that cover shoulders and knees, and shoes that slip off easily for temples and ghat steps. Carry a scarf for sun or dust, and avoid anything you would not want to get wet or marked.
