Miramar Beach

Miramar Beach lies on the edge of Panaji, the capital of Goa, about 3 km from the city centre.

Miramar Beach lies on the edge of Panaji, the capital of Goa, about 3 km from the city centre. Its golden sand runs for around 2 km under palm trees, where the Mandovi River meets the Arabian Sea. The beach is calmer than the busy beaches of North Goa, so it suits morning walks, evening strolls and sunset watching. Fort Aguada is visible across the river, and dolphin-watching boat trips can be booked from the sand.

Where the river meets the sea

Miramar Beach

Miramar Beach sits about 3 km from the centre of Panaji. The Mandovi River flows into the Arabian Sea at this point, and Fort Aguada can be seen on the far bank of the river.

The beach was originally known as Praia Gaspar Dias, and it is still called Gasper Dias Beach in some places. The name Miramar comes from Portuguese and means a place for viewing the sea. Panaji's Portuguese-era character is part of the city's background, and the beach is one of the few in the capital.

The sand, the palms and the daily routine

The beach is a long stretch of silvery to golden sand, lined with palm trees. It runs for around 2 km, which leaves plenty of space even on busy evenings.

Most of the people here are locals. They walk the shore in the early morning and in the evening, and some practise yoga or jog along the sand. Families come to picnic and let children play, and a small park near the beach gives younger visitors space to run. Parking is available near the sand.

The midday heat is strong, so most visitors come early or late in the day. The light is best when the sun drops towards the Arabian Sea.

Dolphin trips and boat rides

Boat trips for dolphin sightings can be booked from the beach. The rides go out into the Arabian Sea, and passengers see the shoreline and the cruise ships anchored in the distance. Dolphins are not always seen, so treat the sightings as a bonus rather than a promise.

Agents on the sand sell packages. Ask what each trip includes and what it costs before you agree. Comparing two or three operators helps you judge the price.

Food near the beach

Street food carts line the area, especially in the evening. Vendors sell chaat, pav bhaji, bhel puri, sev puri, pani puri, shawarma and barf ka gola. Roasted corn, hot tea and vada pav are also common on the sand.

A few restaurants close to the beach are known for cutlet pav and other local specialties. Eat with care when the sun is low, since stalls are few and the nearest shops are a short walk away. Goa Science Centre and Dona Paula are both within a short drive, so many visitors combine the two.
