Chamundi Hill

Chamundi Hill rises above Mysuru, and the Chamundeshwari Temple stands at its top.

Chamundi Hill rises above Mysuru, and the Chamundeshwari Temple stands at its top. The hill takes its name from the goddess Chamundeshwari, and the temple is one of the Shakti Peethas. You can drive up a scenic road lined with greenery or climb the 1,000 steps. From the summit, the city spreads out below, and the lit streets at night make the view especially striking. Halfway up, a large carved Nandi statue is a good place to stop.

The goddess and the hill

The hill is named after Chamundeshwari, the Hindu goddess to whom the temple at the top is dedicated. The temple is one of the Shakti Peethas, a group of sacred sites in the goddess tradition. An excerpt from a travel publication dates the temple on the summit to the 12th century.

Devotees come to seek blessings, and the Chamundi Jayanti festival brings large gatherings of them to the hilltop. Nature lovers come for the views. Early morning is the quietest time, when the temple and its surroundings feel most peaceful.

Getting to the top

The road to the summit winds through greenery and is well maintained, so the drive is pleasant in its own right. If you prefer to walk, the 1,000 steps are the other route up.

The Nandi statue sits halfway along the way. You can stop there on the way up or on the way down. Near the temple, a small shopping area sells religious items and souvenirs at reasonable prices, and stalls along the route sell snacks and refreshments.

At the top

The temple complex shows Dravidian architecture with intricate carving, and the surroundings are kept clean. Take the time to walk around the complex before or after your views.

From the hilltop, you can see the whole city, and the Mysore Palace is one of the landmarks visible from above. An excerpt from a travel publication suggests bringing binoculars to pick out the landmarks. At night, the city lights make the view as striking as the daytime panorama, and a cool breeze often makes the top a comfortable place to linger.
