Chemould Prescott Road is a contemporary art gallery on the third floor of Queens Mansion in Fort, Mumbai. Founded in 1963, it has shown work by leading Indian modernists, including M.F. Husain and S.H. Raza, and continues to present contemporary artists. Inside, spacious, well-lit rooms give you room to look closely and pause. Visit for changing exhibitions that bring established and emerging artists into the same conversation. The gallery is near Jehangir Art Gallery, so the two can fit into one art-focused stop in Fort.
A gallery with a long history

Kekoo and Khorshed Gandhy founded Gallery Chemould in 1963. It became an early platform for modern Indian artists at a time when the art market was conservative. M.F. Husain, S.H. Raza, Tyeb Mehta and Ram Kumar are among the artists who exhibited there.
The gallery first operated from the Jehangir Art Gallery. In 2007, it moved to its present premises in Queens Mansion and took the name Chemould Prescott Road. Its Fort address places it in a part of Mumbai known for colonial-era architecture.
Modern and contemporary Indian art

Chemould has carried forward its focus on Indian modern and contemporary art. Its exhibitions have included work by major figures such as Nalini Malani, as well as artists from later generations, including Shilpa Gupta, Atul Dodiya, Dhruvi Acharya and Shezad Dawood. The programme spans established names and newer practices, so the exhibition on view is central to what you will see on any particular visit.
The gallery has also made room for ways of bringing art to newer collectors. In 2019, Shireen Gandhy curated “Modus Operandi,” an exhibition that presented works by 25 contemporary Indian artists for sale at accessible prices to younger and first-time collectors.
The gallery inside Queens Mansion
The exhibition rooms occupy a loft-like space on the third floor. They are spacious and well lit, giving artworks room to be viewed without the compressed feel of a small display. The building adds another layer to the visit: Queens Mansion is a historic structure, and the gallery’s earlier setting was also part of the Fort area’s older urban fabric.
To reach the gallery, enter Queens Mansion and take the lift from the side entrance. Check the gallery’s website before setting out if you want to see a particular artist or exhibition, as the programme changes.
