Kurz gesagt

Choose Alleppey for backwaters, canals and a night on the water, a shorter and flatter trip from Kochi. Choose Munnar for tea estates and cool air, about three hours by winding road from the airport and longer from the city. With four or more days, do both; with one extra day, pick Alleppey. The cooler months from November to February are the usual choice.

The short answer

Choose Alleppey if you want backwaters, a houseboat or canoe and an easy drive. Choose Munnar if you want tea estates, cooler air and mountain views. If you have only one extra day after Kochi, Alleppey is the simpler trip. With four or more days, do both, with Munnar first and Alleppey last, which avoids backtracking.

The Kochi travel guide covers the city, and the Kerala travel guide shows how both fit into a wider route.

Both are usually most comfortable from about November to February, when days are drier and cooler. The heat builds from March, and the monsoon from June to September brings heavy rain, so check the forecast for any dates near the edges of the season. If you travel in the rainy months, favor Alleppey, where a canal trip can still work in showers, over a Munnar plan that depends on views.

Alleppey: backwaters, canals and a night on the water

Alleppey, officially Alappuzha, is the main gateway to Kerala's backwaters, a network of canals, lakes and lagoons. Kerala Tourism lists it at about 85 km from Cochin International Airport, with Alappuzha railway station as the nearest station, so it fits easily into a long weekend. The Alappuzha guide covers the town in more detail.

The classic experience is a houseboat, known locally as a kettuvallam, with a crew, meals and a sleeping cabin, which cruises during the day and moors for the night. It is a slow and relaxing way to see paddy fields, villages and birds, though it is also the most popular choice, and some routes get crowded. Compare operators carefully. Ask what is included, how many hours you will be on the move, where you will moor, and how the boat handles waste, because the canals are a shared, fragile waterway.

For a quieter option, consider a canoe tour in the narrow side canals, or a stay in a homestay on a village shore. These give a closer view of daily life, and several operators run half-day trips. If you only have a single day, a canoe tour and a lunch in a village is a good compromise. A night on the water is better if you have the time, since the evening and the early morning are when the light and the sounds are best.

Alleppey is mostly flat and warm, so a hat, sunscreen and insect repellent are useful. Bring light layers for the evening, and keep valuables in a dry bag on the boat.

Munnar: tea estates, cool air and winding roads

Kerala Tourism places Munnar about 1,600 m above sea level, and the drive from the Kochi airport is about three hours along the NH85 route, longer from the city and in traffic. The climb is part of the experience, with waterfalls, spice plantations and cooler air as you rise. Munnar is known for its tea estates, which cover the hills in rows of green, and for viewpoints, short hikes and, in season, the wildlife of Eravikulam National Park, home to the Nilgiri tahr. Kerala Tourism notes that the park is closed in February and March each year for the calving season, so plan around those months. See the Munnar guide for the town.

Because the drive is long and winding, Munnar works best with two nights, so you have a full day to see the estates, the tea museum at the Nallathanni estate and a viewpoint without rushing. A day trip from Kochi leaves very little time after the road. The hills are cooler than the coast, especially in the evening, so pack a light jacket, and consider a rain layer from June to September, when mist and rain can hide the views.

Many travelers hire a car and driver for Munnar, which makes sense on a winding road with several stops. Buses run too, but they are slower, and you lose the freedom to stop at waterfalls and viewpoints along the way. If you suffer from motion sickness, plan breaks and ask your driver to go slowly.

A car and driver is worth it for the hills. It is less necessary for Alleppey, where the train and local autos work well, though a driver helps if you want to combine the backwaters with other stops.

Doing both: the order that works

With four to five days after Kochi, a good order is Kochi, then Munnar, then Alleppey, then back to Kochi or on to the south. Going up first means you do the long, winding road when you are fresh, and finish with the slow, flat backwaters as a rest. The Kochi in 2 days plan fits well at the start, and the south of Kerala, with Kovalam and Varkala, is a natural next step.

A shorter version is three days: one night in Munnar and one on the backwaters, with Kochi at either end. It works, but the road time takes up much of the day, so it is best for travelers who do not mind long drives. If you are short on time, choose one and give it a full day.

The monsoon changes the plan. In the rainy months, houseboats and canoes still run, though rain can be heavy and the views muted, while Munnar's roads can be slippery and the hills fogged. Check the forecast, keep your dates flexible and ask your host about road conditions before you leave.

Costs, effort and what to pack

Alleppey is the lower-effort option. The roads are flat, the train is simple and a houseboat includes meals and a crew, so the main decisions are the type of boat and the number of hours on the water. Munnar demands more: a long drive, a cooler climate and more variable weather. It also tends to involve a driver, entry fees at parks and viewpoints, and a night or two in a hill hotel, so the total cost is usually higher than for a simple backwater trip.

Pack for the destination. For Alleppey, bring light clothes, a hat, sunscreen, insect repellent and a dry bag. For Munnar, add a warm layer, a rain jacket and shoes with a grip for wet paths. If you plan to visit Eravikulam or walk through the tea estates, bring water and a small snack, since shops are few on the trails.

For both, keep your schedule flexible. Landslides, heavy rain and festival traffic can slow the road, and ferries can run late. Leave a spare day before an international flight, and avoid booking a tight connection on the day you return from the hills. A relaxed plan makes both places better.

Getting there, booking and what to check

By road, Alleppey is the shorter and flatter run and Munnar the longer climb; check a live map for your departure time, since traffic changes both. By train, Alappuzha is on the rail network, so check IRCTC or the station for the current timetable from Ernakulam, and book early in high season. To plan the rest of your transport, read the transport planning page.

Book a houseboat or a driver early for the cooler months, when demand is highest, and check what is included before you pay. For the hills, ask whether the price includes parking fees, tolls and a driver's food and lodging, which can differ. For anything on the water, ask about life jackets and safety, and avoid overloaded boats.

Before you travel, sort your India e-Visa, set up an eSIM for India so that maps work in the hills and on the water, and compare travel insurance that covers delays and medical care, which is useful for a trip with long road days and monsoon uncertainty.

Häufige Fragen

Should I go to Alleppey or Munnar from Kochi?

Alleppey for backwaters, a houseboat or canoe and flat, easy travel. Munnar for tea hills, cooler air and scenic drives. If you have only one extra day, Alleppey is the easier trip; with three or more, add Munnar.

How far is Munnar from Kochi?

Kerala Tourism gives about 67 miles (108 km) and roughly three hours by road from Cochin International Airport along the NH85 route. From central Kochi, or in traffic, allow longer. The route climbs into the hills, so plan at least two nights in Munnar, because a day trip leaves little time after the drive.

How long does it take to reach Alleppey from Kochi?

Kerala Tourism lists Alappuzha at about 85 km from Cochin International Airport, with Alappuzha as the nearest railway station. Check IRCTC for trains from Ernakulam. Houseboat check-in times vary by operator, so ask before you book, because a late arrival shortens the cruise.

Is a houseboat worth it?

For many travelers yes, as an overnight on the water with meals included. If you prefer quieter, smaller-scale travel, a canoe tour in the narrow canals is an alternative. Compare operators and check what is included before you book.

What is the best month for Munnar?

The cooler, drier months from about November to February are the usual choice for clear views. Mist and rain can hide the hills in the monsoon, so book flexible dates, and note that Eravikulam National Park closes for the calving season in February and March.

Can I do both in one trip from Kochi?

Yes, with four to five days. A common order is Kochi, Munnar, then down to Alleppey and back, which avoids backtracking. Allow time for the long road days.
