Jal Mahal is an 18th-century palace in the middle of Man Sagar Lake, in Amer, Jaipur.

Jal Mahal is an 18th-century palace in the middle of Man Sagar Lake, in Amer, Jaipur. Built from red sandstone, it combines Rajput and Mughal styles and appears to float above the water, with four of its five storeys submerged when the lake is full. The palace is generally closed to the public, so visit the lakeside promenade for views and photos, with the Aravalli hills behind it. A walk along the lake’s back trail adds a quieter way to take in the surroundings.

Jal Mahal

Jal Mahal, or Water Palace, stands in Man Sagar Lake in Jaipur. Maharaja Madho Singh I had it built in the 18th century as a royal hunting lodge and pleasure retreat. The palace was also used as a summer resort for the royal family and for duck-hunting parties.

Its five storeys give the building its distinctive appearance. When the lake is full, four levels are underwater, leaving the top floor visible above the surface. The red sandstone structure combines Rajput and Mughal architectural styles, with symmetrical chhatris, or domed pavilions.

General public access inside the palace is restricted. The lakeside promenade is the place to view it, take photographs and see the building framed by the water and the Aravalli hills. Sunrise and sunset bring softer light and can create reflections on the lake; at sunset, the palace may also catch a golden glow.

For a slower visit, take the walking trail around the lake. The back trail provides lake views and a peaceful setting for a walk. The area is also used for photography, and local vendors sell street food and ice cream along the promenade.
