Gangeshwar Mahadev Temple is a Hindu shrine to Shiva in Fudam village, about 3 km from Diu town on the Arabian Sea coast. Five Shiva lingas stand among the rocks at the water's edge, and the sea washes over them with the waves. High tide gives the most striking view, when the water covers the lingas. Devotees come for the sunrise and evening aarti, and others come for the calm setting by the water. Plan a short walk down to the rocks, and bring sun protection.

The Pandava legend and the lingas

Local tradition holds that the five Pandava brothers, heroes of the Mahabharata, made and worshipped Shiva's lingas here while they were in exile. The main deity of the temple is called Gangeshwar, Lord of the River Ganga, because the river is said to have come down from Shiva's hair.

The five lingas are natural rock formations at the water's edge. The sea does the work of abhishek, the ritual bathing of the lingas, on its own, as each wave comes in and goes out.

The shrine and the setting

The temple is not a grand building. The natural setting is the main attraction. The shrine sits in a cave-like space under a large rock, open to the sea, and the lingas lie beneath it. Statues of Ganesha, Vishnu and Lakshmi stand at the entrance.

Steps and a path lead down from the cliff to the rocks, so expect a short walk in the sun on the way. Local people keep the site clean and well maintained. Work to improve the area around the temple is ongoing, so you may see some building work.

How a visit works

Most visits take 20 to 30 minutes. Go early in the morning or at sunset, when the sunrise and evening aarti take place. Check tide times before you set out. At high tide the water covers the lingas, and at low tide you can come closer and see all five clearly.

The facilities are simple but practical. There is a free parking lot and a wheelchair-accessible parking space. A public washroom is on site. Small shops and a few food stalls operate nearby.

Other sights on Diu

Diu Fort, Nagoa Beach, Ghoghla Beach and Panikota are also on Diu island. St. Paul's Church, the Church of St. Francis of Assisi and the Diu Museum are other sights to fit into the same day.
