Spend day one on the castle museum, the 97-step minaret and an evening in the Valley of the Beautiful Woman, then day two on the basilica, the observatory and an afternoon in the thermal bath. The castle adult ticket was 4,800 HUF and the bath day ticket 4,600 HUF when checked on 4 October 2026. Swap the days if rain is forecast, since the bath and indoor museums work in any weather.

Eger in 2 days at a glance
Two days in Eger is enough for the castle, the minaret, the basilica, an afternoon in the thermal bath and an evening among the cellars of the Valley of the Beautiful Woman. The Eger travel guide explains the town. If Eger is one stop on a longer trip, the Hungary guide shows how it sits against Budapest and the south.
The plan assumes you sleep in or near the Old Town, which keeps every walk short. If you have not chosen a base yet, where to stay in Eger compares four of them. The route puts the castle on day one while your legs are fresh and the bath on day two when you want to slow down. Prices and hours below come from the venues' own websites on 4 October 2026, and seasonal hours change, so check the page before you go.
One structural point shapes both days: Eger is built around a few paid highlights and many free pleasures. The squares, the Baroque streets, the basilica interior and the cellar terraces cost nothing beyond what you eat and drink. The paid items are the castle museum, the minaret, the observatory and the bath. Decide which of those four you really want, and the rest of the plan falls into place.
Day 1: castle, minaret and the valley
Start on Dobó Square, which Visit Eger names as the first stop in town, and walk up to the castle. The castle is the town's grandest monument, and the tourism site calls it a half-day program in its own right. Inside, the Gothic bishop's palace holds the Heroes' Hall and a history exhibition, and the casemates show how a border castle worked in the 16th century. The 1552 siege, when István Dobó's garrison held the castle, is the story behind it all, and the castle's museum tells it through exhibitions and costumed guides lead tours.
The ticket covers more than the fortress. The museum's price page says the adult ticket includes the castle, the Géza Gárdonyi Memorial House, the Ziffer Gallery and the Lenkey János Memorial House, so you do not need to buy those separately. The castle offers a guided tour of the underground corridor system for a small extra fee, with the museum listing it at 1,000 HUF; the tour runs with a guide only, so ask at the ticket office when the next one leaves. Check the exhibitions' own opening times on the opening hours page, because the dungeon, the wax museum and the Varkoch Gate exhibition keep different hours.
Walk down for lunch, then head to the minaret on Knézich Károly utca. It stands 40 m high, with a balcony at 26 m, and the climb is 97 steps up a spiral staircase, according to Visit Eger. It was built about 1596, and the mosque that once stood beside it was pulled down in 1841. Look closely at the top: a cross rises from the crescent, which is why the tourism site calls it the only minaret in the world with a cross on top. The staircase is narrow, so skip the climb if you have limited mobility or a fear of heights, and enjoy the tower from the street. Hours and prices sit on the minaret's own website, so confirm them before you walk over.
By late afternoon, walk to the Valley of the Beautiful Woman. Visit Eger puts it a 10 to 15 minute walk from the center and calls it the number one place in Eger to taste wine. The valley has rows of cellars and terraces, and the cellar system under the whole town runs for 130 km. Ask for Egri Bikavér, the dry red that the tourism site names as one of the best-known and best-selling Hungarian dry reds, and taste a white or two beside it. Eat something substantial, since cellar tastings pour quickly.

Day 2: basilica, observatory and the thermal bath
Begin at the Basilica of Eger on Pyrker János tér. Visit Eger describes it as the second largest religious building in Hungary. It was designed by József Hild for Archbishop János László Pyrker, built between 1831 and 1836 and consecrated in 1837. The basilica's website lists visitor hours of 8:00 to 18:00, with no visits during services, and says individual visitors can enter the church free of charge without a guide. Guided tours, the crypt and the tower have their own tickets, sold at the visitor center, so decide whether you want the interior alone or the extras.
Nearby, the Lyceum on Eszterházy tér holds the observatory, a stop on Visit Eger's top 10 list. The tower started operating in 1776, and the tourism site says the building offers a panorama, a camera obscura and the region's biggest planetarium. It suits a rainy half hour better than a sunny one, so keep it as a weather swap. The Archbishop's Palace and Visitor Center on Széchenyi István utca is another indoor option, with a church arts exhibition and a room whose walls hide a painted bird scene discovered under many layers of paint.
After lunch, spend the afternoon at the Eger Thermal Bath on Petőfi tér. It has three entrances and 13 pools on a 5 hectare site, and Visit Eger describes it as a five-minute walk from the main square.
The afternoon ticket is the sensible buy if you did the castle in the morning and want only a few hours in the water. If the bath is the point of the day, take the full day ticket and an early start. Day tickets are valid on the day of purchase for a single entry, and discounts need an identity document. Check the opening hours on the bath's site, because they change by season.
In the evening, return to the Old Town for dinner, or go back to the valley if you skipped tasting on day one. Eger is a place where the best hour is usually the last one of the day.
Which paid items are worth the money

The evening castle ticket only opens four exhibitions, as the price page lists them: the Varkoch Gate exhibition, the Provision House, the Heroes' Hall and the South Gate exhibition. That makes it a poor substitute for the full ticket, but a fair fit if you arrive from Budapest in the afternoon and want a short look before closing.
Rain plan and winter version
Eger holds up well in poor weather. Indoors, the castle exhibitions, the observatory, the Archbishop's Palace and the basilica are all close together, and the thermal bath is a perfect wet-weather choice. Keep the minaret and the wine terraces for a dry window, and use the cellars themselves when it is cold: Visit Eger says the valley's cellars are pleasant in cooler weather as well as on the terraces.
In winter, the town lights up for Eger Advent, which the tourism site lists from 27 November to 24 December 2026. Dress warmly for the castle hill, which is exposed, and plan the bath for the afternoon so the walk home is short.
Mistakes to avoid
The first is treating the castle as a quick photo stop. It is a half-day visit, and trimming it to an hour wastes the ticket. The second is climbing the minaret without checking the hours on its own site. The third is doing the valley on day one and the bath on day two without a rest in between: a tasting after a long castle day is tiring, so eat first.
The fourth is renting a car. Visit Eger says parking fees vary by zone, and the central sights are close enough to walk. The last is assuming every museum opens at the same time. The castle's own page lists different hours for the dungeon, the wax museum and the town houses, and the holiday opening days on 15 March, 1 May, 20 August, 23 October and 1 November have their own schedule.
A third day if you have one
A third day opens the surroundings. Szilvásvárad, about 20 km from Eger, offers the Szalajka Valley with its forest train and the Lipizzaner stud, and Visit Eger calls it a whole-day trip. Egerszalók, about 5 km away, has a thermal valley and the white Salt Hill formation, and the village of Noszvaj, 7 km out, has a small Baroque mansion. If you prefer water to hills, Lake Tisza lies about 40 km away, with a 70 km cycling loop. A car helps with these, though buses serve several villages.
If your trip continues south, Pécs or Eger helps you decide whether the next stop should be the other wine-and-history city.
Getting around and getting there
Eger is easy to reach from the capital: Visit Eger lists direct trains from Budapest Keleti in under 2 hours, and the plan for a single day is in Eger day trip from Budapest. Inside town, you walk. Local buses sell a single ticket from the driver for 350 HUF, according to the tourism site, and the Tourinform office sells them for less in advance. Buying European train tickets from official sites is covered in buying European train tickets.
Set up your phone before you land. The Europe eSIM roundup compares data plans for maps, train tickets and booking codes, and travel insurance covers cancellations and medical care. If you arrive from outside Europe, EES explained covers the border step, and the visa checker shows the rule for your passport.
