Inside Buda Castle’s south wing, the Castle Museum traces Budapest’s history through archaeological finds, artworks and rooms from the medieval palace. Exhibitions span the city’s early settlements through later periods, with displays on the castle, architecture, daily life and political change. Look for the excavated medieval spaces below ground, including the Gothic room and former chapel, then explore the galleries across several levels. Interactive exhibits and English-language information help bring the objects into context. A visit can take close to three hours if you explore at an unhurried pace.

Budapest’s story inside the Royal Palace

Castle Museum

The Castle Museum is the Budapest History Museum’s home in the south wing of Buda Castle. Its exhibitions follow the city through the lives of Buda, Pest and Óbuda, the separate settlements that later formed Budapest. Archaeological finds and historical objects help trace that history, from the area’s early periods to the political changes of the modern age.

The permanent exhibition Budapest: Light and Shadow follows the capital’s development over a millennium. Displays address subjects including the city’s growth, bathing culture, war and reconstruction. The museum also examines the history of the Royal Palace itself, including its transformation into a cultural institution after the Second World War.

Medieval halls and objects

The lower levels hold excavated remains of the medieval palace, including Gothic and Renaissance spaces. The Gothic room, former chapel and salvaged stonework offer a closer look at parts of the castle that survive beneath the later building. Medieval sculptures are among the collection’s notable objects, alongside paintings and other works of art.

Across the museum, exhibits use objects such as ceramics, textiles, household items and documents to show aspects of life in earlier Buda, Pest and Óbuda. A listening station for medieval music adds sound to the displays in the basement. The exhibitions are spread over several levels, so the QR-code map can help you keep track of the route.

Planning your visit

Allow around two to three hours if you want time for the different exhibition areas. Interactive elements are marked with hand symbols, and exhibition information is available in English. Ticket arrangements can differ between exhibitions, so check what your ticket includes before entering. St Stephen’s Hall is a separate attraction within the castle complex, rather than part of the museum’s main galleries.

Leave larger bags in storage before going into the exhibition areas, where bags are not permitted. The museum’s free QR-code map is useful for finding your way between floors. Wi-Fi is available inside, which helps when mobile reception is poor. The castle complex also includes the Hungarian National Gallery and the National Library, so decide in advance whether you want to focus on the history museum or make time for other institutions.
