Profitis Ilias

Profitis Ilias is Santorini’s highest peak, rising 567 metres above the island near Pyrgos.

Profitis Ilias is Santorini’s highest peak, rising 567 metres above the island near Pyrgos. The summit gives you a 360-degree view across villages, coastlines, the airport and the Aegean Sea, with sunrise and sunset both popular times to take in the panorama. A three-domed monastery, built in the early 18th century, crowns the mountain and is still inhabited, so access to its grounds is limited. You can visit the nearby church and chapels, or follow a short path behind the monastery towards another viewpoint.

Views from Santorini’s highest peak

At 567 metres, Profitis Ilias is the highest point on Santorini. From the summit, the island’s villages, coastlines and airport lie below, with the Aegean beyond. The wide outlook is the main reason to make the trip; there are fewer sights here than in the island’s larger towns.

Sunrise and sunset each bring a different light to the view. The summit can also be foggy, which changes what you can see, and the air is cooler than at the coast. Strong winds are possible, so secure hats and bring a light layer.

The three-domed, fortress-like monastery was built in the early 18th century and remains inhabited by monks. Its access is limited, so visitors should not expect to tour the full complex. Nearby churches and chapels are accessible. The monastery shop sometimes sells products made there, including wine and olive oil.

For a quieter viewpoint, look for the small arrow on the left side of the road in front of the monastery. A short path leads behind it to another panorama. Walkers can also hike up from Pyrgos or explore trails towards Kamari and Ancient Thera. The road to the summit winds uphill, so take care if driving.
