Choose Hania if you want the prettier harbor, an airport and the beaches and gorges of the west. Choose Rethymno if you want a smaller, calmer old town with a long city beach and an easier link to the center and Heraklion. They are about an hour apart by road, so many trips use Hania as a base and visit Rethymno for a day.

Hania or Rethymno: the short answer
For most trips to Crete, Hania is the better base: it has an airport, the more beautiful harbor, and the beaches and gorges of the west within a day's reach. Rethymno is the better base if you want a smaller, calmer town with a long city beach and a shorter drive to the center of the island and Heraklion. The two are only about an hour apart, so the real decision is where to sleep, not whether to see both. Our Hania travel guide and Rethymno travel guide cover each town in detail, and the Crete travel guide shows the wider map.
Think about what you want to do. If your list includes Balos, Elafonisi, Samaria Gorge or Falasarna, Hania puts you closest, and our Balos and Elafonisi day trips guide explains the options. If your list includes Knossos, the Heraklion museum, mountain villages in the center and Arkadi Monastery, Rethymno is a few kilometers closer. If you simply want a pretty old town and a swim, either works, and the choice comes down to atmosphere and price.
Many travelers split a stay, with three or four nights in Hania and two in Rethymno, or the reverse. That keeps transfers short and gives you both old towns without long drives. If you only have a week, pick one base and add one day trip.
Old town and harbor
Hania's old town is larger and more atmospheric. It wraps around a Venetian harbor with a lighthouse and a line of restaurants, and behind it are lanes of Venetian and Ottoman houses, small museums, a covered market and a mix of shops. In summer, the harbor is lively in the evening, and the lanes are best in the morning and late evening when the day crowds thin. It is the more photogenic of the two.
Rethymno's old town is smaller and quieter, and many travelers prefer it for that reason. It has a Venetian fortress on a headland, a small harbor with a lighthouse and a maze of lanes with wooden balconies, fountains and minarets. The town feels like a place where people live, and prices at tavernas away from the harbor are often lower. A walk through the old town takes a few hours, not a full day.
If atmosphere is your first priority and you have limited time, Hania wins. If you prefer a slower pace and a smaller scale, Rethymno is the better fit. Both are crowded at midday in July and August, so go early or late.
Beaches
Rethymno has the advantage of a long sandy beach right beside the old town, which makes it easy to combine a morning on the sand with an afternoon in the lanes. The beach is wide, with shallow water, and it is busy in summer, but there is room, and sunbeds and tavernas line the back of it. It is a good choice for families.
Hania's city beach is Nea Chora, a sandy beach about 20 minutes' walk west of the harbor. It is smaller than Rethymno's, but it has good sunsets and seafood tavernas. The big names are further out: Balos, Elafonisi, Falasarna and the beaches of the Akrotiri peninsula are a 30–120 minute drive away, so a beach day from Hania is a day trip. If you want to swim every day without driving, Rethymno is easier; if you want the most dramatic beaches, Hania is closer.
The south coast is closer to Rethymno, with places such as the palm-lined beach at Preveli within easy reach, and the Amari valley and mountain villages are a short drive inland. Check opening and access details locally for each beach, since facilities and rules change.
Day trips from each
From Hania, the standard day trips are Balos, Elafonisi, Samaria Gorge, the Akrotiri peninsula, the beaches of Falasarna and Seitan Limania, and the small port towns on the south coast. Almost all of them are best done by car or with a tour, and several are long days. The Samaria Gorge guide explains the season and the logistics of that famous walk.
From Rethymno, the day trips are closer to the center of the island. Arkadi Monastery, a short drive southeast, has a famous place in Cretan history. Mountain villages in the Amari valley are cooler in summer, and the south coast beaches are a short drive away. Knossos and the Heraklion archaeological museum are about 1.5 hours east, which makes a big day but a possible one. The Iraklio guide covers that end.
Between the two towns, a bus runs often along the north coast, and the drive is about an hour, so you can leave a rental car at your hotel and use public transport for a day. A day in Rethymno from Hania takes a morning and an afternoon, with time for a lunch in the old town.
Compare the two
The table sets the main factors side by side. Use it with the notes above to match the town to your plan.

Price depends on the season and the area, and neither town is consistently cheaper. Old-town hotels in both are priced for atmosphere, and apartments and hotels outside the center cost less. Book early for July and August, and compare rates for your dates. Our where to stay in Hania guide explains the areas, from the old town to Nea Chora and the villages east of town.
Food, evenings and getting between them
Both towns eat well, and both have a spread from harbor restaurants with tourist menus to small tavernas where locals eat. In Hania, the best meals are usually a few lanes back from the water, in the old town districts and on the streets around the covered market. Rethymno has the same pattern: the front row by the harbor is the busiest and priciest, and the best value is in the lanes and in neighborhoods away from the fortress. Ask what is local, such as Cretan cheeses, greens, snails, lamb and raki at the end of a meal.
Evenings differ in tone. Hania has more going on, with bars in the old town and along the harbor, and busy weekend nights in the high season. Rethymno is calmer, with a mix of cafés, small bars and a student feel in the center thanks to the university, and it empties earlier. If you want a lively late evening, Hania is the better pick; if you want to be in bed by midnight, Rethymno suits you.
Moving between the two is easy. The bus along the north coast is frequent and takes about an hour, and the drive is similar, so a day trip or a change of base costs little. If you rent a car, take it for the days you need and use the bus or taxis for evenings. For the east, our Iraklio guide shows where the main airport and the Knossos sites fit, and the Getting around Greece page explains how to compare buses, ferries and rentals.
Which one to pick
Pick Hania if you are visiting for the first time, flying in and out of Chania, or planning to see the west coast. It is the more famous and more photogenic town, and it works well for four or five nights. Pick Rethymno if you want a smaller town with a beach, plan to see Knossos and the center, or combine Crete with a longer drive along the north coast.
If you have more than a week, split: three or four nights in Hania for the west, then two or three in Rethymno or Heraklion for the rest. Use buses or a rental car between them, and see our Getting around Greece guide for how to compare. If you arrive by overnight ferry, you will land at Souda port near Hania, which tips the balance toward Hania as a first stop.
