Near Trypiti on Milos, these underground galleries served early Christians as a burial ground and place of worship, and may also have offered refuge during Roman persecution. Dating to the 1st century AD, the catacombs contain rock-cut chambers, graves and faded wall inscriptions. Only part of the complex is open, and visits take place with a guide. Pair the stop with the nearby Ancient Theatre of Milos, then take in the sea views along the slope.

The Catacombs of Milos lie near the village of Trypiti, close to the Ancient Theatre of Milos. The underground galleries date to the 1st century AD and were used as a cemetery for early Christians. They also served as a place of worship, and are thought to have offered refuge during Roman persecution.

The complex is carved into volcanic rock. Three groups of tunnels have been identified, with a network extending for more than 180 metres. Estimates put the number of people buried here at around 2,000, in graves cut into the ground or made in the walls.

What you can see inside

Only part of the underground complex is open to visitors, and access is by guided tour. Inside, look for the burial chambers and wall inscriptions, some of which have faded over time. The catacombs are a compact site, so the visit is brief, but the galleries give a direct sense of how the early Christian community used this place.

The catacombs were rediscovered in the 19th century and excavated soon afterwards. Their role as both a cemetery and a place of worship gives the site its particular historical significance.

Plan a visit in Trypiti

The nearby Ancient Theatre of Milos makes a natural addition to a visit. The two sites are within walking distance of each other, and the theatre is also noted for its sea views. Free parking is available at the catacombs.

If you are considering walking from Adamas, allow for a route over quiet roads and dirt tracks; one reported walk took just over an hour. Driving is another option. Tours are guided, so you cannot explore the galleries independently. Visiting outside peak times or seasons can help you avoid crowds.
