Chalikia Beach, also called Votsala Beach, runs beside the harbour and village on Crete. Its clear water and mountain views make it a peaceful place to swim, with a shore that changes from large pebbles to smaller stones and sand as you walk east. Trees provide patches of shade, and sunbeds are available. The water is calmer than at some other beaches in town. Bring a chair if you want to settle on the pebbles, and continue past the first rocky stretch for easier access to the water.
The shore and swimming

The beach begins beside the harbour and village, with a road and promenade alongside the shore. Large pebbles cover the first stretch. Walking east, you reach smaller stones and then patches of sand, with trees appearing along the water.
Finding a quieter place

The section nearest the road is where families tend to gather. Continue farther along the beach for a quieter spot. The early part of June can bring colder water, but it may be clearer then. Snorkelling is possible, though the underwater experience can be limited.
