The Zappeio Roman Baths are the remains of an ancient bathing complex near Zappeion Hall and the National Garden in Athens. From the street, you can look down on the preserved rooms and trace the layout of a bathhouse, including its heating chambers. An information panel explains the site’s history. The baths make a convenient archaeological stop while walking along Vasilisis Amalias Avenue or visiting nearby landmarks, though you view them from above rather than entering the ruins.
How the baths changed over time

The bath complex was built after the Herulian raids of the late third or early fourth century AD. It was later destroyed, then rebuilt and enlarged during the fifth and sixth centuries.
The baths originally stood beyond the city walls. As Athens expanded around the Temple of Olympian Zeus and Hadrian’s Gate, the area became part of the city centre.
Rooms and remains

The site is part of a larger bath complex that extends east into the National Garden and west along Vasilisis Amalias Avenue. The preserved section contains two hypocaust chambers, two praefurnia, or heating rooms, and nine other rooms.
During the Byzantine era, clay grain-storage silos were sunk into the floors of the bath rooms. Their presence records a later use of the site after its bathing facilities had been built.
Viewing the archaeological site
The ruins are below street level, so you see the structures from above rather than walking among them. From this viewpoint, you can make out rooms of different sizes. An information panel provides details about the site and its history.
The baths were excavated during metro construction. Their location near Zappeion Hall and the National Garden makes them easy to include in a walk through this part of Athens.
