Inside the former royal stables at Schloss Nymphenburg in Munich, the Marstallmuseum displays more than forty historic carriages, sleighs and gala vehicles used by Bavarian monarchs. Look closely at the gilding, carved wood and elaborate horse tack, then find the vehicles associated with King Ludwig II, including his coronation coach. It is a useful addition to a palace visit if you are interested in royal transport, decorative craft or Bavarian court life.

The Marstallmuseum occupies the former royal stables in the southern wing of Schloss Nymphenburg. Its collection traces the carriage and riding traditions of Bavarian monarchs from the 18th to the early 20th century. More than forty carriages, sleighs and ceremonial vehicles are on display.

The vehicles were made for different kinds of court life, including coronations, weddings, processions and hunting trips. Their ornament is part of the story: look for gilding, carved details and the fittings that accompanied each journey. King Ludwig II’s vehicles include an elaborate coronation coach. The collection also includes a sleigh associated with the king, fitted with electric lights.

Carriages are only part of the displays. Historic saddles, bridles, harnesses and other riding equipment show the craft behind the horses and vehicles used at court. Interactive screens provide additional information about the objects.

The museum also presents Nymphenburg porcelain. A small natural history display explores connections between people, animals and the natural environment, including the history of hunting and forest habitats. The museum extends across two floors, with another section beyond a breezeway, so allow time to explore beyond the first rooms.
