Murol Castle is a medieval castle on a volcanic hill above the village of Murol, in the Auvergne Volcanoes Regional Nature Park. The walk up to the entrance is steep. Inside, rooms show how people lived in the Middle Ages, including a crow cage that was used for torture. Costumed guides, horse and knight displays, and archery demonstrations bring the castle's history to life. From the rocky spur where the castle stands, you can see Lake Chambon and the valley below.

A fortress on a volcanic hill

Murol Castle

The castle was built in the 13th century on a volcanic hill, and it has stood there for more than 800 years. The fiefdom of Murol sat where three major routes met. Its lands were rich, and from the rocky spur the castle towered over the valley and protected the people below.

Walk the walls and towers and you can picture the noble families who once lived here. The grounds are open to explore, and the climb from the road is part of the approach.

Several rooms show how medieval life was lived. The crow cage, a device used for torture, is among the old objects on show. It is part of the castle's history, and it sits alongside displays of everyday life from the period.

The rooms are best seen at a slow pace, so you can read the displays and look at the stonework of the walls and towers.

Shows, guides and costumes

Guides in period clothing lead visitors through the castle. Live shows bring horses, knights, falconers, jugglers and farmers in costume into the grounds. Real archery demonstrations and mock fights are part of the programme.

Visitors can wear cloaks for photos. Special shows and events run at some times, so check what is on when you plan your day.

The view and the walks

From the outcrop, Lake Chambon and the Couze Chambon valley are in view, with the village of Murol below. On a clear day, the Dent du Marais, the Chaudefour Valley and the Sancy can be seen further off.

Several walking routes pass the castle. One begins at Beaune-le-Froid and continues through cow pastures to Saint-Nectaire. Another follows the shore of Lake Chambon, where people swim and take part in water activities.
