La Gare du Sud opened in 1892 and served the Provence region for nearly a century. It closed in December 1991, when a new Nice railway station took its place. The building stands at 35 Avenue Malaussena in the Libération district.

Prosper Bobin designed the station with André Biancheri, Nadine Clément and Paul Ravaux. Its Neoclassical architecture gives the former transport hub a distinct place among the district’s historic buildings.

After its railway days, La Gare du Sud became a venue for food and activities. Kiosks served a range of dishes, while live music, Latin dance lessons and exhibitions brought people into the building. An exhibition about Leonardo da Vinci included interactive pieces and a screen presenting his work.

The upstairs area had seating and games such as billiards, darts and foosball. Screens in the central area showed live sports. The venue is now listed as permanently closed, so check its status before planning a visit.
