The Zoo de Montpellier sits in the Parc de Lunaret, on the northern edge of the city, and entry and parking are both free. The zoo covers about 80 hectares of forest and parkland, with more than 750 animals from around 140 species. Enclosures are large and the paths are shaded, so the visit feels closer to a walk in the woods than a typical zoo. Look for giraffes, white rhinos, lions and cheetahs, and expect to search for some animals in their enclosures.
From a bequest to a city zoo

The land was once part of an estate owned by Henri de Lunaret, who also owned the Hôtel des Trésoriers. He left the property to the city on the condition that it serve a charitable purpose. The zoo has operated on the site since 1964.
The zoo borders a nature reserve on the banks of the Lez River, and the rocky riverside terrain shapes parts of the park. The zoo is an accredited member of the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria (EAZA). The free admission traces back to the same agreement that transferred the estate to the city.
What to see inside

The collection includes giraffes, white rhinos, cheetahs, lions and Syrian brown bears. Because the enclosures are spacious and planted, animals are not always in plain view, so take a little time at each one.
The Amazon House is a recent addition, with tropical plants and exotic birds and animals. The park is roughly half animal areas and half walking routes, so you can set your own pace and choose different loops.
Some sections have been under works, and at times fewer animals have been on show. Check the zoo's website for updates before your visit.
Planning the visit
The entrance, restrooms and car park are wheelchair accessible, and the site is suited to strollers. There is a playground and activities for children, which makes the zoo a practical choice for families.
Drinking fountains are spread around the park, so you can refill water bottles during the walk. Dogs are allowed in the park.
Plan for the shade on the paths, since open stretches can be exposed in the heat. Morning or late afternoon, outside the hottest hours, is the more comfortable time for a long walk.
