Romieu Garden

Romieu Garden is a terraced green space between Bastia’s Old Port and Citadel, with shaded paths and views over the harbor and city. Mediterranean and exotic plants grow among its winding walks, including trees such as the Judas tree and belombra. The monumental Romieu Staircase descends toward the port and provides a place to pause above the waterfront. Come for a quiet walk between nearby sights, or take the steps down to the Old Port around sunset. The route includes many stairs, so wear comfortable shoes.

A garden between the Citadel and the port

Romieu Garden sits below the Governor’s Palace and links Bastia’s Citadel with the Old Port. Its terraces descend toward the sea, with paths and stone steps winding between planted areas. The garden makes a convenient walking connection between the waterfront and the upper part of the old town.

The garden’s layout includes curved paths, vases, statues, fountains and wrought-iron railings. Its greenery combines Mediterranean vegetation with exotic species. Judas trees, belombra and pittosporum are among the plants found here.

The Romieu Staircase

The monumental staircase is a defining part of the route between the Citadel and the port. From the South Quay, you can climb into the garden; the descending steps lead toward the Old Port. The elevated position gives views across Bastia and the harbor, with ships visible below.

The garden is close to the Governor’s Palace and Bastia Museum, and the Old Port is at its foot. You can include it in a walk between these nearby sights, then continue toward the town center and its market streets.
