Sydenham Hill Wood is a surviving stretch of the ancient Great North Wood in south London, with paths beneath mature trees and more than 200 tree and plant species. Look for the railway tunnel once used by Victorians travelling to the Crystal Palace, the remains of an old railway bridge and a folly. Fallen branches and logs give children room to play, while the tree cover quiets the city. You can start walks nearby at Dulwich Grove or Sydenham Hill.

A remnant of the Great North Wood

Sydenham Hill Wood is the largest remaining part of the Great North Wood, an ancient woodland that once stretched from the Thames to Croydon. The sloping site runs from one of London’s highest points towards the South Circular. Its dense tree cover screens out much of the city’s sound and views, creating a quieter route through south London.

More than 200 tree and plant species grow here, alongside wildlife that includes rare fungi, insects, birds and mammals. Fallen trees, branches and logs are part of the woodland setting, and children can use them for imaginative play.

Railway history beneath the trees

The woodland holds traces of its railway past. A Victorian tunnel runs beneath it, once carrying passengers towards the Crystal Palace. Look out for the remains of the old railway bridge and a folly as you follow the paths. The wood also has a connection to a painting by Pissarro, which depicts a train leaving the old Lordship Lane station.

Walks can begin from different nearby points, including Dulwich Grove and Sydenham Hill. The setting changes with the season; autumn brings colour to the trees. A view of central London landmarks is also visible from the wood.
