St Stephen Walbrook is an active Church of England church at 39 Walbrook in the City of London, close to Bank station and Mansion House. Sir Christopher Wren designed its domed building after the Great Fire of 1666; inside, the central dome and paired pillars create a bright, open space. Come to see the architecture, or plan around a lunchtime piano recital or an evening concert. Guided tours offer a way to learn about the church’s history and its place in the City.

A church rebuilt after the Great Fire

A church has stood at this site since at least the 11th century. Its name recalls the Walbrook, a stream that once ran through this part of London and is now among the city’s lost rivers.

The medieval church was destroyed in the Great Fire of 1666. Sir Christopher Wren designed its replacement, completed in 1679. The building was slightly damaged by bombing during the London Blitz in 1941 and later restored.

The dome and interior

From the outside, the church can seem modest in scale. Inside, the central dome gives the space a different character, with natural light and paired pillars drawing the eye through the interior. The circular arrangement of the altar and pews has also led to the church being called the Round Church.

St Stephen Walbrook is known for its acoustics as well as its architecture. Lunchtime piano recitals and other classical music events take place here, alongside evening concerts. The intimate interior makes music a natural reason to plan a visit.

Tours and events

Guided tours provide more detail about the church’s history and connections. The church also has a programme of live events, including candlelight tribute concerts. Check its schedule before travelling if you have a particular performance in mind.
