Handel Hendrix House

Handel Hendrix House in Mayfair brings together the former homes of George Frideric Handel and Jimi Hendrix, who lived next door to each other on Brook Street centuries apart.

Handel Hendrix House in Mayfair brings together the former homes of George Frideric Handel and Jimi Hendrix, who lived next door to each other on Brook Street centuries apart. Walk through Handel’s restored Georgian rooms, including the kitchen, then visit the recreated flat where Hendrix lived in 1968 and 1969. Displays, photographs and objects trace both musicians’ lives and work, and live performances add music to the visit. Download the digital guide to follow the rooms at your own pace; lockers and toilets are available in the house.

Two musicians on Brook Street

Handel Hendrix House joins two homes on Brook Street in Mayfair. George Frideric Handel lived at number 25 from 1723 until his death in 1759. Jimi Hendrix moved into a flat next door, at number 23, in 1968. They lived centuries apart, but the neighbouring properties now tell both stories in one visit.

The house presents the contrast between Handel’s Georgian home and Hendrix’s 1960s rooms. Displays cover their lives and music, while photographs and objects in Hendrix’s section add context to his time in London.

Handel’s restored rooms

The first four floors are devoted to Handel. The rooms have been arranged to evoke their Georgian appearance, with period furniture and Baroque instruments. The restored interiors include the kitchen, giving a sense of the domestic spaces alongside the rooms associated with his musical work.

One room is linked to the composition of The Messiah. Handel’s long connection to the house gives the rooms a close focus on where he lived and worked, rather than a general survey of his music.

Hendrix’s London flat

Hendrix’s flat occupies the top floor and has been recreated to reflect its appearance in 1968 and 1969. He lived there for less than a year. The exhibition explores his life and performances through photographs and artefacts, alongside the domestic rooms.

The flat was also a place where Hendrix wrote and rehearsed music, welcomed guests and took part in media interviews. Its smaller scale offers a different view of the musician’s time in London from the displays below.

Planning your visit

A downloadable digital guide leads you through the exhibits. Staff are available to answer questions, and lockers on the lower floor provide a place to leave belongings before you begin. Toilets and a small gift shop are on site.

The house is open Wednesday to Sunday and closed on Monday and Tuesday. The venue recommends booking tickets in advance. Live music performances take place at the house, with classical and rock music among the styles represented.
