Christ Church Spitalfields is an Anglican church on Commercial Street in east London, built by Nicholas Hawksmoor between 1714 and 1729. Its English Baroque design, tall steeple and spacious interior make the church a rewarding stop for architecture and history. Look up to take in the high ceiling and chandeliers, and check the programme for choir performances, organ recitals or services. The crypt adds another dimension to a visit. Public opening is limited to Sunday afternoons, so check ahead if you hope to see the interior.

Hawksmoor’s Baroque church

Christ Church Spitalfields was built between 1714 and 1729 to serve east London’s growing population. Its construction followed the Fifty New Churches Act of 1711. The architect, Nicholas Hawksmoor, had worked alongside Christopher Wren and designed six churches in London. Christ Church is built in the English Baroque style, using Portland stone.

The church’s tall steeple rises 202 feet. Its scale made it a prominent landmark in an area that was home to French Huguenot refugees in the early eighteenth century. The interior’s broad space, high ceiling and elegant columns give the architecture room to register from within.

Inside the church

Look across the main interior for the columns, chandeliers and high ceiling. The building was restored in 2004. Its layout and proportions are central to its architectural character, while the tall steeple remains a defining feature from outside.

Christ Church is also known for its 1735 organ, built by Richard Bridge, a leading organ builder of his time. Organ recitals and choir performances are among the events that can bring the interior to life; check the church programme for dates.

The crypt and visiting

The crypt offers a quieter, distinct part of the building to explore. The church is still an active place of worship, with services and community events that include joint worship gatherings and Christmas carol performances. Visitors are welcome, but public opening is limited: the listed visiting time is Sunday afternoon, from 1 to 3 PM. Check the church website before setting out, particularly if you are planning around an event.
