Bunhill Fields is a historic burial ground and green space at 38 City Road, between the City and Islington. It became a burial place for Nonconformists, Christians who worshipped outside the Church of England, and is associated with writers and artists including John Bunyan, Daniel Defoe and William Blake. A central path runs between City Road and Bunhill Row; lawns, shrubs and benches offer a quieter place to pause. Some sections are behind railings, so access to graves is limited outside guided visits.
A burial ground for Nonconformists
Bunhill Fields became a burial place for people who worshipped outside the Church of England. Burials took place here from 1665 to 1854. The site may have served as a burial ground much earlier, though its earlier history is not certain.
The name is closely tied to the people buried here and the religious communities they belonged to. The grounds are both a place of remembrance and a green space within the city. Historic stones and monuments sit among trees, lawns and planted areas.
Writers and artists among the graves
John Bunyan, author of The Pilgrim’s Progress, Daniel Defoe, author of Robinson Crusoe, and poet and artist William Blake are among the best-known people associated with Bunhill Fields. Isaac Watts is also buried here. Their graves connect the site with English writing and religious thought.
A paved area in the centre contains notable monuments, including Bunyan’s tomb, which stands apart on an open stretch. Blake’s grave has a marker identifying his resting place. The older stones and iron railings give the cemetery a distinct character; their appearance changes with the seasons and the angle of the light.
Paths, gardens and access
A central route crosses the grounds from City Road to Bunhill Row. Beside it, a lawn, shrubs and benches provide space to sit. Trees shade the paths in summer, while fallen leaves and low sunlight alter the feel of the grounds in autumn and winter.
Access is not the same throughout the site. Large sections are enclosed by railings, and visitors may not be able to reach every grave without joining a guided tour. You can still walk through the accessible parts and see the grounds from the paths. For a nearby stop, John Wesley’s home and chapel stand opposite the City Road entrance.
