Municipal House, or Obecní dům, is an Art Nouveau civic and cultural building on Náměstí Republiky, beside the Powder Gate in Prague’s Old Town. Its facade is worth a look, but the richly decorated interiors are the main draw: guided tours visit the ornate halls, including rooms with paintings by Alfons Mucha. Smetana Hall hosts classical concerts, and the building also has a café, restaurants and bars. Visit for the architecture, book a concert, or combine both.

A civic building on a royal site

Municipal House stands on Náměstí Republiky, next to the Powder Gate. The site once held the Royal Court, a complex built around 1380 under King Wenceslas IV. Bohemian kings lived there from 1383 until 1485. After the court was abandoned, the old buildings were eventually demolished in the early 20th century.

The present building was designed by Antonín Balšánek and Osvald Polívka. Construction began in 1905, and Municipal House opened in 1912. It was created as a civic and cultural centre. In 1918, the Czechoslovak declaration of independence was made here.

Art Nouveau in the halls

The building’s Art Nouveau design continues from the facade into its public rooms. Stained glass, murals, paintings, mosaics, sculpture and detailed metalwork contribute to the interior. The decoration involved several Czech artists, including Alfons Mucha; his paintings can be seen in the building’s halls.

A guided tour gives access to the sumptuously decorated rooms, including spaces that are not part of a casual visit to the lobby or bar. The different halls show varied decoration and design. English-language tours are available, but they can fill up, so check the schedule and book ahead if you have a particular day in mind.

Smetana Hall and places to eat

Smetana Hall is the building’s principal concert venue and hosts classical performances. Attending a concert lets you experience the hall as a music venue as well as see its architecture. Check the performance schedule and ticket availability before planning your visit around a show.

Municipal House also contains a café, restaurants and bars. The lobby and downstairs bar are options if you want to see part of the interior without booking a tour. A basement beer hall and American Bar are also mentioned as places inside the complex; ask locally about access and service when you visit.
