Near Wenceslas Square, the Church of Our Lady of the Snows is a Gothic church with a remarkably tall interior and an elaborate altar. Founded by Charles IV in the 14th century, it was planned on a much larger scale than the building that was eventually completed. Go through the courtyard to find the entrance, then look up at the high ribbed vaults and take time with the sculptures and Baroque altars. The church remains a place of worship, so keep your visit quiet if services or prayer are underway.
A church planned on a grand scale

Charles IV founded the church in 1347, around the time of his coronation as King of Bohemia. It was intended to be a coronation church and part of a larger statement about Prague’s importance. The original plan called for a substantial, triple-aisled basilica, but the building was never completed to that design.
The Hussite Wars interrupted construction and damaged work already done. Financial difficulties also slowed progress, and the original plans were not carried through. The church’s unfinished history is part of what makes its scale striking: its high vaults belong to a building conceived on a far larger scale than the one ultimately completed.
Inside the church

The interior draws the eye upward to its ribbed vaults, which reach about 34 metres. The high space gives the church a strong Gothic character, while its furnishings include Baroque altars and elaborate sculptural work. The principal altar is particularly large, rising across much of the wall and drawing attention toward the crucifix above it.
Look around the church as well as toward the altar. Sculptures and decoration appear throughout the interior, and statues stand in the courtyard before the entrance. The exterior gives less away than the inside, so allow time to pass through the courtyard and look closely once inside.
Finding the entrance and visiting respectfully
The church is near Wenceslas Square, but its entrance is set back through an arch and courtyard. From the street, the building can be easy to overlook; follow the passage into the courtyard to reach the church. The courtyard is also a good place to pause and see the statues before entering.
This is an active Catholic church as well as a historic building. If worshippers are present, keep your visit quiet and avoid interrupting prayer or a service. The interior can also be experienced during Sunday Mass, when singing is part of the service. Entry has been described as free.
