At 108 Calle 13 in Havana’s Vedado district, the López Serrano Building is a 14-storey apartment tower completed in 1932. Designed by Ricardo Mira and Miguel Rosich, it was Cuba’s first high-rise and Havana’s tallest building until the FOCSA was built in 1956. Its stepped forms and geometric lines give the façade a distinctly Art Deco profile. If you can see inside, look for Moroccan red marble and original decorative details; a floor near the top also gives views over Havana.

López Serrano Building

Completed in 1932, the López Serrano Building was designed by Ricardo Mira and Miguel Rosich. Its 14 storeys made it Cuba’s first high-rise, and it remained Havana’s tallest building until the FOCSA was built in 1956.

The apartment tower drew inspiration from New York’s Rockefeller Center. Its stepped upper levels and strong vertical lines give the exterior a recognisable Art Deco character. The building is at 108 Calle 13, on the corner of Calle L, in Vedado.

The façade’s geometric lines continue into the interior. Moroccan red marble covers parts of the walls, alongside large decorative flowerpots, ceiling lamps and original doors to the lifts and apartments. Some construction details have survived, though the building has deteriorated over time.

Access is not guaranteed because this is a residential building. If you are able to enter, be considerate of residents and take time to notice the materials and fittings. An upper floor can provide a view over Havana.
