Castillo de la Real Fuerza is a 16th-century fort beside Plaza de Armas, on the western side of Havana’s harbor. Built to defend the city from pirate attacks, it now houses a maritime museum with recovered artifacts and a detailed ship model. Look for the angled bastions, moat and rooftop lookout, where you can take in views across the city. Allow about 1 to 1.5 hours; much of the museum information is in Spanish, so a translation app can help.

Castillo de la Real Fuerza stands on the western side of Havana’s harbor, set back from its entrance and beside Plaza de Armas. Construction began in 1558 and the fort was completed in 1577. It was designed to guard Havana against pirate attacks, but its position inside the bay left it poorly placed for that defensive purpose.

The building’s form is still easy to read from outside: angled bastion walls, a moat and a lookout tower. Its long history has included uses beyond defense. After military needs declined in the 19th century, it housed an archive and a library, and it was also used as a ceramics museum and a museum of arms.

The maritime museum

The fort now houses a museum devoted to Havana’s maritime history. Its displays include original objects and artifacts recovered from underwater excavations, connecting the city’s history with navigation and trade. A detailed ship model is another focal point inside.

The collection gives the fort a second layer of interest: you can look at the defensive structure and then explore objects linked to the harbor and Cuba’s seafaring past. Some areas may be closed during a visit, so the exhibits available inside can vary.

The lookout and La Giraldilla

The rooftop lookout is a place to see Havana from above. The tower is known locally as La Giraldilla, after the figure on its weather vane. The figure holds a cross in one hand and a palm-tree trunk in the other, and its design was modeled on the weather vane atop Seville Cathedral’s Giralda tower. La Giraldilla is associated with Havana as a city symbol.

For a more comfortable visit, go early in the day, when the fort is likely to be quieter and there is better light for photographs. Much of the museum information is in Spanish, so using a translation app can help you follow the displays. Tickets in advance are recommended. Plan for about 1 to 1.5 hours, including time to see the museum and the rooftop.
