Colina Lenin, or Lenin Hill, is in Regla on the outskirts of Havana. The monument depicts Lenin’s face carved into the hillside. Below it, 12 life-size white figures reach towards the face, creating an unusual scene for photographs.

The monument was the first dedicated to a Soviet leader to be built outside the USSR. It sits away from Havana’s main attractions, so a visit also takes you to a quieter part of the city.

A trail through greenery leads up the hill. From the site, you can look across Havana Bay towards the city and see rooftops in Regla, as well as the surrounding countryside. The views make the climb worthwhile for photography.

The monument and grounds are now neglected. Go early or later in the afternoon for cooler conditions, and bring insect repellent for mosquitoes. Local residents may be able to share stories about the hill’s history.
