Beth Shalom's Synagogue

Beth Shalom was built in 1952 in Havana’s Vedado neighbourhood. The 20th century brought Jewish arrivals from Europe who were escaping persecution, and the synagogue became a focal point for Jewish life in Cuba.

In 1981, much of the original building was sold to the Cuban state. The space became the Bertolt Brecht Cultural Centre, with a theatre, music venue and bar. After a period of neglect, the synagogue was restored in the 1990s.
