The Monumento a Los Colonizadores sits on Chipre hill above Manizales, Colombia. Its bronze sculptures honor the founders of the city, and the monument was made from about 50 tonnes of bronze, including keys and other tools donated by local residents. Past the figures, a viewpoint looks over the town and out to PNN Los Nevados. Clear days give the widest panorama, and cloudy weather can hide the distant peaks. Seating areas let you rest before the walk back down.
The founders in bronze

The monument honors the people who settled the region and laid the foundations of Manizales. Part of its bronze comes from keys and other implements that local residents donated, so the metal carries a personal link to the families of the city.
The figures are dynamic. The bronze shapes suggest movement and strong feeling, which holds attention even when the weather is gray.
Symbols in the composition

One symbolic element is a church carried on the back of an ox, which stands for the hardships the colonizers faced. Read the group slowly and the other figures add to that story of arrival and struggle.
The 'Agony' set is separate and smaller. It shows a miniature city suffering an earthquake, with bulls around it. It is one of the less obvious parts of the monument, so leave time to find it.
The walk up Chipre hill
The climb is part of the visit. The route passes views over the rural land and the Andes before you reach the bronze. Food vendors come out later in the day along the way.
From the city center, the bus marked 'Chipre' runs along Carrera 23. On weekends the sky above the hill fills with colorful kites, carried by strong breezes, which makes the setting lively.
