Valparaiso Cultural Park

Valparaíso Cultural Park sits on Cerro Cárcel, on the site of the city's former prison.

Valparaíso Cultural Park sits on Cerro Cárcel, on the site of the city's former prison. The complex keeps several of the old buildings and adds visual arts spaces, a theatre, a gunpowder house, a garden and a large green lawn. Murals cover the old exercise yards, and rotating exhibits, live theatre and dance keep the buildings in use today. Walk the grounds, look out from the viewpoint over the harbour, and stop for coffee on the second floor.

The park occupies Cerro Cárcel, the hill where the city's prison once stood. The prison building is still part of the complex. The site also includes a gunpowder house and a garden.

The buildings sit around an open park that was planned to encourage local artistic practice. The base level was designed to hold dance, music, theatre and circus space. The park stands on the largest flat surface in this hilly city, which gives it more open ground than most sites in Valparaíso.

The old exercise yards carry large murals, and they are the first thing that stands out when you walk in. The buildings also hold visual arts spaces and a theatre for live performance. Dance has its own rooms.

The programme changes often. Exhibits rotate, and classes, courses and round tables run from time to time. Some events and exhibitions feature LGBTQ+ artists and themes. A section of garden plots, known as the allotment area, adds a community side to the grounds.

The café, bookstore and views

The café and bookstore are on the second floor of the main building. Restrooms are available on site.

From the lawn and the viewpoint you can see the harbour and the city below. The lawn is a good place to sit after walking through the buildings. The newer concrete architecture contrasts with the old prison walls, which suits anyone interested in how the site was reused.

Access and parking

The entrance, the restrooms and the parking lot are wheelchair accessible. Parking is on site, and free street parking is also listed. Tickets can be bought in advance, which is recommended.
