The Ascensor Reina Victoria is a historic funicular that carries you up the steep hillside of Valparaíso, Chile, from the streets near Plaza Aníbal Pinto to Cerro Alegre. The ride takes about a minute and costs 100 Chilean pesos. It is worth the stop for the trip itself, the views over the bay, and the cafes and street art at the top. Named after Queen Victoria, it dates from the early 1900s and is one of the few historic elevators still in service in the city.

The funicular dates from the early 1900s and was named for Queen Victoria of England. Its purpose is to connect the lower part of the city, near the port, with the upper hills.

It was declared a historic monument in 1998. The line is short but steep, about 40 meters long, with an incline of around 52 degrees.

The ride takes about a minute. The cars climb from Avenida Elías, near Plaza Aníbal Pinto, to a small plaza at the top that connects with Paseo Dimalow.

At the top, a small metal slide is set in the plaza for anyone who wants to try it. The slide is fast, so wear trousers rather than leggings. Restaurants and cafes around the top give you a place to sit with the view. You can ride back down as well, or take the stairs.

Around the stations

Near the lower station, the Casa Altamira beer house sits on Elías street. On the route down from Cumming street you reach the Cinzano bar and Plaza Aníbal Pinto.

Paseo Dimalow is known for its street art, and the lanes around Cerro Alegre hold more murals and small shops. Several free walking tours in the city include the funicular. From the top, you can see Cerro Panteón and its cemetery.
