Cathedral Grove is an old-growth forest in MacMillan Provincial Park, beside Highway 4 near Port Alberni on Vancouver Island. Short walking loops pass beneath Douglas firs, western redcedars, western hemlocks and other trees, with moss and ferns covering the forest floor. Some of the largest Douglas firs are about 800 years old and reach roughly 250 feet tall. The paths are an easy way to see the grove, though conditions differ across the highway: one side has a wide, level boardwalk, while the other is rougher and can turn muddy.

Cathedral Grove

Cathedral Grove is part of MacMillan Provincial Park on central Vancouver Island, near Port Alberni and Cameron Lake. Highway 4 runs through the park, with walking areas on both sides of the road. The grove protects a rare remnant of an ancient Douglas fir ecosystem.

The largest Douglas firs are around 800 years old, about 250 feet tall and close to 29 feet in circumference. Western redcedar, bigleaf maple, western hemlock and grand fir also grow in the park. Ferns and moss cover the forest floor beneath the high canopy.

The paths are short and easy to follow, making this a convenient stop for a forest walk without a long hike. Trails on both sides of the highway loop among the trees. On the side with the restrooms, a wide, level wooden boardwalk provides a smoother route. Paths on the other side are more uneven, with gravel and muddy sections.

The highway separates the two areas, so take care when crossing. The boardwalk can be slippery when wet, and rain can leave puddles and mud along the trails. Waterproof footwear is useful after wet weather; a cane or wheelchair may be harder to manage on the rougher side.

Planning your walk

The short loops can take less than an hour at a steady pace, though time spent stopping for photographs or looking at the trees can extend a visit. Parking is beside the highway and can be busy at peak times, so arriving early can help. The grove is quieter in the off-season, including fall and winter.

Choose another time to visit if strong winds are forecast. Falling branches can make the trails hazardous. Keep to designated paths to protect the forest, and allow time to cross the road carefully between the two trail areas.
