Toronto Old City Hall

Toronto Old City Hall stands at Queen and Bay streets, opposite Nathan Phillips Square.

Toronto Old City Hall stands at Queen and Bay streets, opposite Nathan Phillips Square. Completed in 1899 to designs by E.J. Lennox, it served as the city council’s home until 1966. Look for the red sandstone façade, carved stone details and clock tower, then view the building alongside the modern City Hall across the square. The interior has a stained-glass window depicting Toronto’s growth, but public access is limited to ceremonies and selected summer weekends, so check access before planning a visit inside.

A civic landmark at Queen and Bay

Toronto Old City Hall was designed by local architect E.J. Lennox and completed in 1899. It housed Toronto’s city council until 1966, when the council moved to the newer City Hall across the street. The building later became a courthouse.

Its position opposite Nathan Phillips Square makes the contrast between the two civic buildings easy to see. Old City Hall’s stonework and clock tower give it a very different profile from the modern structure nearby. The historic building was designated a National Historic Site in 1984.

The exterior is built from red sandstone, with darker bands across the façade. Arches, towers and intricate carvings draw the eye toward the clock tower, the building’s most recognizable feature. Gargoyles decorate the tower; the original stone figures were replaced with bronze replicas for safety.

Inside, the main hall has a stained-glass window that depicts Toronto’s growth. The building also has colorful murals at the entrance, marble walls and mosaic floors. Interior access is not available every day, so check whether the building is open to the public before making a special trip.

Planning a visit

Old City Hall is at 60 Queen Street West, across from Nathan Phillips Square. When the interior is closed, the square gives you a clear place to view the façade and tower. The exterior is still worth a short stop if you are exploring downtown or visiting the square.

Public access is available for ceremonies on Thursdays and on selected summer weekends. The building is also used for civic ceremonies, including intimate wedding ceremonies. If you are visiting for the architecture, look for the stone details around the entrance and tower, then take in the building from the square.
