The manor began as a summer villa for British Governor Frederick Haldimand in 1781. In the 1790s, Edward Augustus, the Duke of Kent, rented the house. The Duke was Queen Victoria’s father, and the manor was connected to his relationship with Madame de Saint-Laurent.

The original building was destroyed by fire in 1993. The manor now standing on the site is a reconstruction that retains the architecture of the earlier house.

Inside the manor is an interpretation center with photographs of the Sugarloaf, a cone of ice created by frozen spray from the falls in winter. It gives the building a role beyond dining: visitors can learn about a seasonal feature of the waterfall before returning to the grounds.

The cable-car terminals also have snack options, while the manor has a restaurant and snack bar. This makes the upper site a practical place to pause during a visit to the falls.
