Cathedral of the Holy Trinity

The Cathedral of the Holy Trinity stands on Rue des Jardins in Québec City’s Upper Town.

The Cathedral of the Holy Trinity stands on Rue des Jardins in Québec City’s Upper Town. Built between 1800 and 1804, it was the first Anglican cathedral outside the British Isles. Inside, look for the latticed ceiling, curved details, pillars and historical artifacts; the spacious, bright interior has a quiet feel. The cathedral’s architecture reflects British influence in early Canada, and services are held in both English and French. Entry is free, so it’s an easy stop for architecture and history between other sights in the historic centre.

The Cathedral of the Holy Trinity is the cathedral of the Anglican Diocese of Québec. The diocese was established in 1793, and its first bishop, Jacob Mountain, set plans in motion for a cathedral. Construction took place from 1800 to 1804, after the British conquest of Québec. It became the first Anglican cathedral built outside the British Isles.

Military officers William Robe and William Hall designed the building. Its façade was modelled on St Martin-in-the-Fields in London, with a pediment, an arched entrance and Ionic pilasters. These Palladian details brought a style associated with Britain to Canada.

The interior is spacious and bright, with a simple layout. Look up to see the latticed ceiling and its gilded-chain motif, then notice the solid English oak pews, made from timber from the Royal Windsor forest. The building’s curved ceiling and pillars add detail to the restrained interior.

The cathedral’s tower holds eight bells from Whitechapel in London. Its communion silver was given by King George III. The collection of historical artifacts has included items connected with the cathedral’s past; displays can change, so check what is on view during your visit.

A working cathedral

The cathedral continues to serve Anglican congregations in Québec City, with services in English and French. Musical events have also been part of its life: the cathedral has hosted organ music and choral activity. If you would like a guided visit or hope to attend a service or performance, check the cathedral’s website for current information before you go.
