Sambódromo Marquês de Sapucaí

Sambódromo Marquês de Sapucaí is Rio de Janeiro’s purpose-built avenue for the Carnival samba school competitions.

Sambódromo Marquês de Sapucaí is Rio de Janeiro’s purpose-built avenue for the Carnival samba school competitions. Designed by Oscar Niemeyer and opened in 1984, it runs for 700 metres between tiered spectator stands. During Carnival, schools travel the route with percussion, choreographed performances, elaborate costumes and floats; a single school’s parade lasts about 70 to 80 minutes. Rehearsals can also bring the venue to life outside the competition. Come for the music and spectacle, and plan your route to the stands before event-night road closures complicate the trip.

A permanent avenue for Carnival

Sambódromo Marquês de Sapucaí, also known as Passarela Professor Darcy Ribeiro, was designed by architect Oscar Niemeyer as a permanent home for Rio de Janeiro’s samba school parade. It opened in 1984. The long concrete route is flanked by spectator stands, turning an avenue into a venue for the annual competition.

The parade ground stretches for 700 metres. During Carnival, samba schools move along it with musicians, choreographed groups, floats and elaborate costumes. Each school’s performance takes about 70 to 80 minutes, so watching one parade is a substantial event in itself. The stands are tiered, with different sections looking onto the route.

What happens during the parade

The schools compete over several evenings during Carnival. Percussion drives each procession as performers and floats advance down the avenue. Costumes and coordinated movement fill the length of the route, while the stands face the competition. This scale is part of the design: the structure gives the schools a long performance space and places spectators alongside it.

The main competition nights draw large crowds, and the event can run late. Choose a section with your view in mind. One visitor found section 7 clearer than section 9, where structures obstructed part of the view near the start of the route. That account is a useful prompt to check the seating layout when choosing tickets, rather than a guarantee of the same sightline from every seat.

Rehearsals and getting there

Rehearsals offer another chance to see samba activity at the Sambódromo before the Carnival competition. The venue’s atmosphere changes with the event: outside Carnival, the parade avenue can be empty, while rehearsals bring music and activity back to the stands and route.

Make a transport plan for Carnival nights. Road closures can affect access, and rides may be difficult to secure when crowds are heading to the venue. Some attendees have found the walk from their drop-off point to their section confusing, so allow time to orient yourself after arrival. Food and drinks are available inside, and visitors may bring their own. The venue has restrooms and visible security during events.
