Museu Histórico Nacional

In Rio de Janeiro’s Centro, the Museu Histórico Nacional traces Brazil’s past through art, objects and historic architecture.

In Rio de Janeiro’s Centro, the Museu Histórico Nacional traces Brazil’s past through art, objects and historic architecture. Its collection spans from the colonial period to the republic, with gilded imperial coaches, Dom Pedro II’s throne and large history paintings among the highlights. The museum occupies a complex that began as a 1603 fort and later took in other military buildings. Allow at least two hours to explore its several levels; if renovations limit access to the main displays, check what temporary exhibitions are open.

A fort transformed into a museum

The museum’s buildings have served several purposes over the centuries. The complex began with the Fort of Santiago, built in 1603 at the former Ponta do Calabouço, a strategic point of defence. A prison, a Casa do Trem and a war arsenal were later added to the site.

The museum was established in 1922. Its historic setting connects the city’s military past with its present role as a place for preserving and presenting Brazilian history.

Objects from empire and republic

The collection brings together objects, documents and artworks connected to Brazil’s political, social and cultural history. Its displays cover the country’s colonial period, empire and early republic.

Look for gilded imperial coaches and the throne of Dom Pedro II. Large paintings depicting historical events are another prominent part of the collection. The museum also holds an extensive numismatic collection of coins and banknotes.

Planning a visit

The museum is large, with several levels, so a visit requires time. Renovations may affect access to the main exhibition; check for temporary displays when planning your visit. Admission is free.
