Espaço Cultural da Marinha is a maritime museum on Orla Conde in Centro, Rio de Janeiro, near Praça XV. You can board a retired naval ship and submarine, and see a naval helicopter, with exhibits on Brazil’s naval history. The submarine’s compact passageways and steep stairs make the visit a challenge for some people with limited mobility. Allow time to explore the ships and enjoy views across the harbor; the on-site cafe has shaded seating.

Board a submarine and naval ship

The main draw is the chance to go inside a retired submarine and a naval ship. Displays inside the submarine include interactive elements, while the ship has exhibits arranged across several levels. Some submarine passages are narrow, with steep stairs and circular doorways, so moving through the interior takes more effort than walking around a typical museum gallery. People with limited mobility may find access difficult.

A naval helicopter is also on display. Other military objects reported at the site include an aircraft, tanks and guns. The mix of vessels and equipment gives the visit a practical focus on naval history and life aboard military craft.

A waterfront site in Centro

The museum is on Orla Conde, near Praça XV, in downtown Rio. It occupies former customs docks built on land reclaimed in the second half of the nineteenth century. The center is part of a Marine Cultural Complex that also includes the Naval Museum and Ilha Fiscal.

One of the vessels associated with the site is the Galeota D. João VI, built in 1808 and used into the early years of Brazil’s republic. The museum’s broader collection relates to the history of navigation in Brazil. English information is available on some displays, including material inside the submarine and more detailed exhibits aboard the ship, but not every placard has an English translation.
