Duque de Caxias Fort, also called Leme Fort, sits atop Morro do Leme at the end of Copacabana in Rio de Janeiro. A paved, uphill route through the military site leads to the fort and wide views of Copacabana Beach and Sugarloaf Mountain. On a clear day, you may also see Christ the Redeemer and the Dois Irmãos hills. Look out for marmosets along the way, and visit the small exhibition for historical details and old photographs of Copacabana.

The walk up Morro do Leme

The approach to Duque de Caxias Fort follows a paved, cobbled service road up Morro do Leme. It is an uphill walk rather than a dirt hiking trail, with vegetation providing shade for much of the route. The climb becomes steeper near the end, so bring water and wear comfortable clothing.

The fort is part of a military site. Personnel are stationed along the route, and the fort is described as well maintained. Marmosets may appear along the way; observe them without feeding them.

Views and the fort’s past

At the summit, the views take in Copacabana Beach and Sugarloaf Mountain. In clear weather, Christ the Redeemer and the Dois Irmãos hills may also be visible. Benches provide places to rest, and clean bathrooms are available at the top.

The fort has also been known as Forte da Vigia, Forte da Espia and Forte do Leme. Its history dates to the 18th century. A small exhibition presents details about the fort’s history alongside photographs of Copacabana in the past.
