Arco do Teles is an eighteenth-century archway in central Rio de Janeiro, linking Praça XV with Travessa do Comércio. Walk through to find a cobbled lane lined with traditional houses, cafés, bars and restaurants. The passage has an Old Rio atmosphere, and its bars and restaurants bring a livelier feel after dark, with free Brazilian music shows on some evenings. Stop for an affordable lunch on a weekday, or visit on Thursday when samba is played. Stay aware of your surroundings as you explore the area.

An archway linking historic streets

Arco do Teles stands by Praça XV and opens onto Travessa do Comércio, a small cobbled street in central Rio. The arch dates to the eighteenth century and once connected the old Senate House with a similar building. That Senate House was later destroyed in a major fire, while the arch survived.

The passage belonged to the residence of one of the region’s important families during the colonial period. Its surrounding streets still contain traditional houses, some dating from the 1700s. The lane is easy to miss if you walk past without looking for the arch, so take a moment to enter from Praça XV.

What to see along Travessa do Comércio

Beyond the arch, the historic passage is made up of narrow streets with houses, cafés, bars and restaurants. Its cobbled paving and old buildings give the area a distinct sense of Rio’s past within the city center. One house, number 13, is associated with Carmen, the Brazilian woman often photographed with fruit on her head.

The lane is compact, and works well as a short stop while exploring Praça XV and nearby central Rio. The VLT tram is close by, and Carioca metro station is in the area.

Lunch, bars and live music

Restaurants along the cobbled street serve Brazilian food at affordable prices, making a weekday lunch a practical reason to visit. In the evening, bars and restaurants draw people to the passage, with free local music shows on some nights. Samba is played on Thursdays, and live music is also reported on Wednesdays.

The mood changes with the time of day: lunch is a quieter way to see the historic lane, while evenings bring more activity. Keep aware of your surroundings as you walk through central Rio.
