INPA, the National Institute of Amazonian Research, maintains Bosque da Ciência, a forested reserve and science exhibits in Petrópolis, Manaus. Easy trails wind through trees where monkeys and agoutis can roam freely. Along the way, you may see manatees, giant otters, electric eels, caimans and freshwater turtles, as well as displays about insects, plants and caboclo life. It is a compact way to encounter Amazonian wildlife and learn about the region without leaving the city. Allow time for the trails and exhibits; mosquitoes are common, so bring repellent.

Bosque da Ciência is a forested area maintained by the National Institute of Amazonian Research. The institute was created in 1952 and implemented in 1954 to study the Amazon’s physical environment and living conditions, with the aim of supporting human well-being and regional development.

Within the reserve, easy paths lead through trees and past animal enclosures. Monkeys and agoutis may move freely around the grounds, so keep an eye on the trail and the branches as you walk.

The reserve keeps animals including manatees, giant otters, electric eels, caimans, snakes and freshwater turtles. Exhibits cover insects and plants, as well as caboclo life, referring here to non-Indigenous people living a more modest way of life in the forest.

The site also has a restaurant and a small museum. Conditions vary across the grounds, and some enclosures have been noted as needing maintenance. Bring mosquito repellent for the outdoor paths.
