Haydn’s last home

Joseph Haydn bought the house in Gumpendorf in 1793, when he was about 61. The area was then a quiet village outside Vienna; it is now part of the city’s 6th district. He moved into the house four years later, after a period that included a long trip to London, and lived there until his death in 1809.

The house was his residence during the final 12 years of his life, a period when his fame was at its height. The surviving building has been restored as a small permanent exhibition about the composer and his later years.

The rooms bring together Haydn’s compositions, documents and personal possessions. His last piano is among the objects on display. Music excerpts, pictures and manuscripts help put his work alongside the story of his life in the house. English translations are available with the exhibition.

The garden is another part of the visit. A virtual parrot greets visitors in the entrance courtyard, adding an unexpected detail before you explore the rooms. There is also a room dedicated to Johannes Brahms, with memorabilia connected to his nearby apartment, which was destroyed in the 20th century.
