On Vienna’s Ringstraße beside the University of Vienna, the Votive Church is a Neo-Gothic landmark known for its twin spires, carved stonework and stained-glass windows. Step inside to see how colored light falls across the spacious interior, or visit after dark for the Light of Creation show, which pairs changing lights and music with the church’s architecture. The church was built as a votive offering after Emperor Franz Joseph survived an assassination attempt. Take time to view it from the open square as well as from inside.
A church built in gratitude

The Votive Church was built after an unsuccessful assassination attempt on Emperor Franz Joseph in 1853. His brother, Archduke Ferdinand Maximilian, organized a fund for a church as an offering of thanks. Donations from people across the monarchy helped pay for the project.
Construction took more than 20 years. The church was consecrated on April 24, 1879, the silver wedding anniversary of Franz Joseph and Elisabeth. Its name refers to a votive offering, a gift made in gratitude.
Neo-Gothic details inside and out

The church stands on the Ringstraße, next to the University of Vienna. Its two tall spires form a clear landmark, but closer views reveal the carved stonework and fine tracery across the façades. The design draws on French cathedral architecture.
Inside, the church has a three-aisled basilica plan. Stained-glass windows color the light in the spacious interior, where the height and open layout create a quieter atmosphere. Look around the side walls as well as toward the main interior to take in the windows and architectural detail.
Light of Creation
The church also hosts an immersive light and music show. Changing colors and patterns are projected through the interior, using the building’s height and architectural details as part of the presentation. The show lasts about 30 minutes.
For a different view, the façade is illuminated after sunset. If you plan to attend the indoor show, reserve seats ahead of time; Category I seating is suggested for a better view. The church square gives you room to walk around and see the exterior from several angles.
