SSPX Church of the Franciscans

The Church of the Franciscans, or Minoritenkirche, is a Gothic church at Minoritenplatz in central Vienna.

The Church of the Franciscans, or Minoritenkirche, is a Gothic church at Minoritenplatz in central Vienna. Its standout artwork is a nearly 50-square-metre mosaic copy of Leonardo da Vinci’s The Last Supper, commissioned by Napoleon and now housed inside the church. Look for the church’s medieval architecture and frescoes, or check the concert programme for classical and gospel performances. The building has served Vienna’s Italian congregation since 1782 and retains much of its original structure.

The Minoritenkirche stands on Minoritenplatz in Vienna’s inner city. Construction began in the 13th century and continued into the 14th. The church was originally run by Franciscan friars, also known as Friars Minor. Its architecture is primarily Gothic, with Romanesque influences, and it has remained largely unchanged structurally for centuries apart from the loss of its spire.

The bell tower dates to the 14th century. The tower was damaged during the Ottoman sieges of Vienna in 1529 and 1683; the church’s former spire was ultimately replaced by a flat top. The church has served Vienna’s Italian congregation since 1782 and is also known as the Italian National Church of St Mary of the Snow.

Inside the church is a nearly 50-square-metre mosaic reproduction of Leonardo da Vinci’s The Last Supper. Napoleon commissioned the work more than 200 years ago, and it eventually came to Vienna. Its scale makes it a focal point of a visit; the church’s frescoes are also worth looking for.

Lighting conditions can affect how clearly you see the artwork. Check the Mass schedule, or consider a guided visit, as lights may be on when tour groups are present.

Concerts at the church

The Minoritenkirche hosts classical concerts throughout the year, with a fuller programme during Advent. Gospel performances are also part of its concert calendar. Check the programme before planning a visit around a performance, and arrange tickets in advance.
