MuseumsQuartier Wien is a cultural complex in Vienna’s 7th district, set in the former imperial stables.

MuseumsQuartier Wien is a cultural complex in Vienna’s 7th district, set in the former imperial stables. Baroque buildings sit alongside modern museum architecture, with the Leopold Museum, mumok, Kunsthalle Wien, Architekturzentrum Wien and ZOOM Children’s Museum among its institutions. Choose a museum for Austrian art, modern works or child-focused exhibits, then take a break in the courtyard, where cafés and outdoor seating make room to pause. You can also visit for the architecture and public spaces without planning a full day of museum visits.

From imperial stables to cultural complex

MuseumsQuartier occupies the site of Vienna’s former imperial stables, designed by Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach. The historic Baroque buildings have been joined by modern structures, creating a complex where the older architecture remains part of the experience. The contemporary additions include the basalt-clad mumok building, completed in 2001 by Ortner & Ortner.

The complex covers around 90,000 square metres in Vienna’s 7th district. Its institutions span art, architecture, children’s culture and performance, with museums and exhibition spaces set around public courtyards.

The Leopold Museum focuses on Austrian art and includes works by Egon Schiele and Gustav Klimt. Mumok presents modern art, while Kunsthalle Wien hosts contemporary exhibitions. The Architekturzentrum Wien is devoted to architecture, and ZOOM Children’s Museum gives younger visitors a chance to explore art, science and everyday culture through child-focused exhibition and studio rooms, play stations and workshops.

There is more here than museum galleries. The complex also includes a dance centre, artist studios, cultural initiatives, cafés and restaurants. Events and festivals add to the programme, so check the MuseumsQuartier calendar if you are planning around a particular exhibition or performance.

Taking a break in the courtyard

The courtyard is a public gathering place with outdoor seating, cafés and restaurants. Its long, bench-like Enzi and Enzo seats give visitors a place to rest between museum visits or spend time outside on a warm evening. The mix of historic façades and contemporary museum buildings is also easy to appreciate from the open spaces.

You can make the courtyard a brief stop or use it as a pause between galleries. If you are visiting with children, a short break between nearby attractions can help break up a museum-focused day.
