Mirabell Palace and Gardens sit on the right bank of the Salzach River, across from Salzburg’s Old Town. Built in 1606, the palace was later reshaped in Baroque style; today, parts of the building serve as city offices. Walk the formal gardens for flowerbeds, fountains, mythological statues and views of Hohensalzburg Fortress. The Pegasus Fountain and the steps from The Sound of Music’s “Do-Re-Mi” scene are familiar sights. If the Marble Hall or Angel Staircase is open during your visit, take a look inside.

Prince-Archbishop Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau commissioned Mirabell Palace in 1606. His successor, Mark Sittich von Hohenems, gave it the name Mirabell. The palace was reshaped in Baroque style in the 18th century, then rebuilt in a simpler Neoclassical style after a fire in 1818.

The palace is now used for municipal offices, including the offices of Salzburg’s mayor and city council. It is partly open to the public, so access to interior rooms can depend on what is taking place.

The Marble Hall and Angel Staircase

The Marble Hall was once a ceremonial hall and is now used for weddings and classical concerts. Mozart performed in the hall during his youth. Concert programmes can include works by Mozart and other classical composers; check current performance details before planning an evening around one.

The Angel Staircase, also called the Raphael Donner Staircase, is decorated with putti and sculptures by Georg Raphael Donner and his students. If the palace is open during your visit, these interiors provide a close look at its decorative details. The Marble Hall may be unavailable when events are underway.

Walk through the gardens

The formal gardens are arranged with flowerbeds, fountains, terraces and sculptures inspired by mythology. The Pegasus Fountain is one of the best-known features, and the paths give views towards Hohensalzburg Fortress. Other details to look for include the Rose Garden, Orangery, hedge theatre and Dwarf Garden, with its small marble figures.

The gardens also have a place in The Sound of Music. Maria and the children’s “Do-Re-Mi” sequence was filmed here, including scenes around the Pegasus Fountain and on the steps. Spring and summer are the seasons to choose for flower displays; in winter, the garden’s colour is more limited.

Getting the most from your visit

Mirabell Palace and Gardens are at Mirabellplatz 4, across the Salzach from Salzburg’s Old Town. The grounds work well as a short stop between the station area and the historic centre, or as a pause from sightseeing. An early start can mean a calmer walk and more room for photographs.

You can explore the gardens without paying admission. For a concert in the Marble Hall, check the programme and ticket arrangements ahead of time. If seeing the palace interior matters to you, confirm access on the day, since some areas are not always open.
