Rainforestation Nature Park

Rainforestation Nature Park is a wildlife and cultural attraction on Kennedy Highway, just outside Kuranda, about 30 minutes from Cairns.

Rainforestation Nature Park is a wildlife and cultural attraction on Kennedy Highway, just outside Kuranda, about 30 minutes from Cairns. Its three main experiences are a guided ride through rainforest and waterways in a World War II amphibious Army Duck, the Pamagirri Aboriginal Experience, and a park with native Australian animals. You can learn about rainforest plants on the ride, watch traditional dance and music, try boomerang throwing, and see animals including kangaroos, koalas, crocodiles and cassowaries. Check activity times before you go, as the park’s experiences run to schedules.

The Army Duck rainforest tour

The amphibious Army Duck takes visitors through part of the rainforest on land and into the water. The guided tour lasts about 45 minutes, with commentary on plants and wildlife along the route. Look for orchids, ferns, strangler figs and the stinging tree, as well as birds, reptiles, turtles and other wildlife. The vehicle’s route combines rainforest tracks with waterways, giving you a view from both land and water.

Guides explain what grows and lives in the park as the vehicle moves through the landscape. The tour is a good fit if you want an introduction to the rainforest without setting out on a long walk. The park also has walkways for viewing wildlife and exploring the grounds.

Pamagirri Aboriginal Experience

The Pamagirri experience shares aspects of local Indigenous culture through demonstrations and performance. Activities can include boomerang throwing, spear demonstrations, didgeridoo playing and traditional dance. The dance performance takes place in a rainforest amphitheatre. A Dreamtime Walk provides another way to hear about traditions and beliefs, while the Bush Tucker Walk introduces native plants used for food and other purposes.

Activity schedules matter: performances and demonstrations take place at set times, so check the day’s programme before choosing when to arrive. The park also has a bush-food experience that introduces native ingredients such as warrigal greens, rosella, Davidson plum and bunya nut, along with information about gathering and preparation. Experiences available can depend on the package or tour you choose.

Koala and Wildlife Park

The wildlife park brings together Australian animals in enclosures and viewing areas. Animals listed at the park include koalas, kangaroos, wallabies, crocodiles, wombats, dingoes, cassowaries and Tasmanian devils. Some experiences allow visitors to hand-feed kangaroos or wallabies, and koala photo opportunities are available by advance booking. Check the current schedule and booking details if a particular animal encounter is important to your visit.

Rainforestation combines the wildlife park with its cultural activities and rainforest tour, so you can choose how much to fit into the day. On-site cafes and restaurants provide places to eat between activities. The park is on Kennedy Highway outside Kuranda, with Kuranda Village a short distance away; it is also roughly 30 minutes from Cairns by coach.
