In La Boca, the Benito Quinquela Martín Museum occupies the former home and studio of the painter who made the port and its workers central to his art. Its collection includes his oil paintings and etchings, alongside work by other Argentine artists and temporary exhibitions. Look for the bold port scenes, the colorful tiles in the former kitchen and bathroom, and the hand-painted piano. The rooftop terraces add another reason to climb: sculptures sit above views of the port.

Quinquela Martín and the port

Benito Quinquela Martín was born in 1890 and died in 1977. He grew up in La Boca, a port and industrial neighborhood shaped by successive arrivals of immigrants. The district’s daily life became the subject of his work, and he chose to paint the place where he had grown up rather than turn to other settings.

His paintings return to the port, its workers and the movement of water. Silhouettes of laboring men, smokestacks and reflections recur across the collection. Broad, rough brushstrokes and dark colors give the scenes their distinctive character. For a single example of his vivid use of color, look for “A Pleno Sol,” painted in 1924.

Inside the former home and studio

The museum is in the building Quinquela Martín designed and donated. It opened in 1938, and the artist used the building as his home and studio. The rooms bring together his work and personal artifacts, giving you a chance to see his paintings alongside traces of his life in La Boca.

The collection includes oil paintings and etchings made between 1922 and 1967. It also holds Argentine figurative art spanning from the late 19th century to the present, as well as temporary exhibitions. Take time to notice the domestic details: colorful tiles remain in the former kitchen and bathroom, and a piano was painted by Quinquela Martín himself.

Rooftop terraces and other collections

The visit continues above the galleries. Sculptures occupy the rooftop terraces, and the highest level looks out over the port. These details connect the museum’s setting to the scenes Quinquela Martín painted below.

The museum also displays work by Argentine artists beyond Quinquela Martín and has an exceptional collection of ship figureheads. Together, the collections give the visit more than one focus: the artist’s interpretation of La Boca, the history of the building as his home and studio, and other works of Argentine art.
